GEOLOGICAL NOTES Quaternary Glacial-Interglacial Climate Cycles in Hawaii

چکیده

The upper kilometer of the Hawaiian Scientific Drilling Program core consists of lavas that were emplaced subaerially, burying paleosols. These paleosols were preserved with minimal alteration and are used to construct a ∼330-kyr Quaternary climate record. Within the temporal resolution of this record, there appears to be a ∼100-kyr climate oscillation between cool-dry and warm-wet conditions, indicating that tropical regions such as Hawaii have responded to the same global climate forcings as have higher-latitude areas during at least the past three glacial-interglacial cycles. It is also suggested that Hawaiian climate may have become progressively warmer and wetter over the same period. Online enhancements: appendixes.

Quasi-100 ky glacial-interglacial cycles triggered by subglacial burial carbon release

A mechanism is proposed in which climate, carbon cycle and icesheets interact with each other to produce a feedback that can lead to quasi-100 ky glacial-interglacial cycles. A central process is the burial and preservation of organic carbon by icesheets which contributes to the observed glacial-interglacial CO2 change (the glacial burial hypothesis, Zeng, 2003). Allowing carbon cycle to intera...

The study of the role of Quaternary tectonic and climatic factors on the geomorphological evolution of Meshkin Shahr depression fan systems

Aims & Backgrounds: The Quaternary period is considered as the interval of climatic oscillations (glacial and interglacial) coupled with tectonic episodes. Therefore, tectonics and climate have simultaneously governed the evolution of Quaternary alluvial fans. Unraveling the tectonic and climatic factors under varied depositional systems is therefore the fundamental issue in understanding the e...

Consistent role of Quaternary climate change in shaping current plant functional diversity patterns across European plant orders

Current and historical environmental conditions are known to determine jointly contemporary species distributions and richness patterns. However, whether historical dynamics in species distributions and richness translate to functional diversity patterns remains, for the most part, unknown. The geographic patterns of plant functional space size (richness) and packing (dispersion) for six widely...

Reconstruction of the Late-Quaternary climate change using magnetic susceptibility of Saadabad-Gorgan loess deposits

Introduction   One of the processes of the Quaternary era is the glacial and interglacial periods. In the glacial period, loesses deposited and in the interglacial period, Paleosoils were formed. The northern part of Iran is geographically the same as countries such as China, a large part of which has been covered with loess sediments during the Pleistocene glacial period. Loess sediments in ...
